What is the best corkscrew?
The best one to buy is one that looks like this. Notice it has two stages and a hinge on chrome part. You can often find these for under $10 at most wine shops.
Don't buy complicated, expensive wine-openers. I know a lot of people like The Rabbit, or even some of the more ridiculous contraptions. They are a waste of money.
If you live in fear of breaking the cork, this is the opener for you. You have to rock it back and forth to get it in and twist slowly to get it out. It will not damage the cork. Great for well-aged wines.
What are the best wine glasses?
Whatever you like. I like Riedel Vinum Syrah glasses because the goblets are huge and they sing nicely. I also like the Riedel O glasses, because I can wash them without worrying about breaking the stems. My girlfriend has some handblown glass cups that are about the size and shape of dixie cups, but with nice glass patterns on the outside that we frequently use. Ben likes to drink wine out of coffee cups. Don't spend money on Riedel glasses because all the wine-snobs say it makes it taste better. I've never had a bad wine turn good or a good wine turn bad because I put it in the wrong glass. Get something you will enjoy.
